Sophorolipids

INCI Name: Glycolipids (or Sophorolipids)

CAS No.: 148409-20-5

Molecular Formula: C34H56O14

Molecular Weight: 688.8

Description: Sophorolipids are glycolipid biosurfactants produced by fermentation of Starmerella bombicola (formerly Candida bombicola). They are green, bio-based compounds with a hydrophilic sophorose head and a hydrophobic long-chain fatty acid tail. Sophorolipids exhibit excellent surface-active properties including emulsification, wetting, dispersion, and low foaming. They are 100% natural, non-toxic, non-irritating, and biodegradable, making them a promising alternative to synthetic chemical surfactants. This product is cosmetic/personal care grade.

Functions & Applications:

1. Gentle Cleansing: As a green surfactant, sophorolipids are mild and non-irritating to skin. They are widely used in facial cleansers, body washes, shampoos, etc., to replace synthetic chemical surfactants.

2. Anti-aging & Skin Care: Sophorolipids stimulate fibroblast metabolism and collagen synthesis, improving skin elasticity and reducing wrinkles. They also inhibit free radicals and elastase activity, reduce skin aging, and help even skin tone.

3. Anti-inflammatory & Soothing: Sophorolipids regulate inflammatory cytokines, reduce skin inflammation, and promote skin health.

4. Antimicrobial: Sophorolipids inhibit various bacteria, especially Propionibacterium acnes, making them effective in oil-control and anti-acne products. The antimicrobial mechanism involves disruption of cell membranes.

5. Moisturizing & Nourishing: Sophorolipids provide good wetting and water retention, helping maintain skin moisture balance and enhancing skin lubrication.

6. Penetration Enhancement: Sophorolipids can act as transdermal penetration enhancers, improving the skin absorption efficiency of active ingredients in cosmetics.

7. Green & Sustainable: Sophorolipids are produced via microbial fermentation and physical extraction without chemical additives.

They are 100% biodegradable, aligning with Clean Beauty and sustainability principles. Structural Types: Sophorolipids are divided into two main types based on 1',4''-esterification: lactonic sophorolipids (SLM) and acidic sophorolipids (SLA). Generally, lactonic form has lower surface tension, higher lipophilicity, and stronger antimicrobial activity; acidic form has better water solubility and higher foaming ability.

Solubility: Freely soluble in water. Lactonic form is more lipophilic; acidic form has better water solubility.

Recommended Dosage: 0.5% – 5.0% in personal care formulations, depending on formulation needs and application.

Storage: Store at room temperature, sealed, dry, protected from light. Do not store or use under excessively low or high temperatures for extended periods.

Packing: 25 kg/drum, or as per customer requirements.

Country of Origin: China

Regulatory Status: : INCI name Glycolipids is listed in China's "Catalog of Used Cosmetic Ingredients (2021 Edition)" (Serial No. 06603) as a skin protectant. Maximum historical usage levels: 5% for body leave-on products, 13.876% for eye area leave-on products, and 20% for leave-on products in general. The raw material is non-prohibited under the "Cosmetic Safety Technical Specifications (2015 Edition)". Glycolipids are also listed in the EU COSING database..
