Careful Use Of Chinese And Western Medicine

Jan 07, 2020

Now the combination of Chinese and Western medicine has been very common in the treatment of diseases, and its effect has long been recognized by people. However, when using medicine, we should also pay attention to whether there is a clear taboo between traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine. If it can be used in combination, the same way of administration should also be used separately. The combination of Chinese and Western medicines with similar side effects and the combination of Chinese and Western medicines with adverse interactions should be avoided.

Careful use of Chinese and Western Medicine

Traditional Chinese medicine with strong acidity, such as black plum, hawthorn, Schisandra, etc., can not be compatible with sulfanilamide antibiotics, because the organic acids contained in traditional Chinese medicine can acidify urine after metabolism in vivo, which not only reduces the effect of antibiotics, but also reduces the solubility of acesulfanilamide in the acidic environment of its organic acids, precipitates in renal tubules, forms crystals, and causes kidney damage.

Some traditional Chinese medicines containing tannins, such as Polygonum cuspidatum, Sanguisorba officinalis, gallnut, pomegranate peel, old crane grass, Platycladus orientalis, etc., when combined with ferrous sulfate, are easy to produce tannin iron precipitation and affect the absorption of ferrous sulfate. When combined with enzyme drugs, the main component of enzyme is protein, which is a high molecular compound connected by amino acid through amide bond. Tannin can combine with amide bond to form a solid ammonia bond association compound, which will reduce the efficacy or failure of enzyme activity. The combination of tannic traditional Chinese medicine with tetracycline, rifampicin, Sulfanilamide and other drugs can affect the metabolizing speed of the latter, increase the reabsorption of renal tubules, damage the liver, and possibly lead to toxic liver disease.

Traditional Chinese medicine containing cyanogen glycosides, such as peach kernel and almond, should not be combined with sedative hypnotics and narcotic antitussive drugs, which may cause inhibition of respiratory center, damage liver, affect liver function and even death.

Vitamins should not be used with some traditional Chinese medicine, such as vitamin BL, such as pomegranate peel, rhubarb areca, Polygonum cuspidatum, Platycladus orientalis, agrimony, gallnut, etc. Due to the permanent combination of the above traditional Chinese medicine and vitamin BL, it will be discharged from the body, resulting in the lack of vitamin BL. Traditional Chinese medicine containing rhubarb should not be combined with vitamin B2, niacin, vitamin BL and vitamin B6, because it can reduce the antibacterial effect of rhubarb. Scutellaria baicalensis and Radix Aucklandiae can obviously inhibit the intestinal tract, increase the absorption of digoxin and vitamin B12, and slow down the excretion.
